Can Acupuncture Help My Back Pain?
Lots of our clients ask us about acupuncture and whether we would recommend it for their back pain. In a nutshell the answer is yes; it is very likely to help relieve some of your symptoms. But let me tell you a little bit more about acupuncture, how it works and how it can help back pain.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the use of very fine needles to treat your symptoms. It has been used in Asia for many centuries but has been used in Western medicine for the last few decades as the medical evidence shows the benefits that it can have.
What Does it do?
The effects of the musculoskeletal acupuncture that we in physiotherapy do are three fold. One aspect works as a pain killer, one to promote healing and the final is to relax muscles including treating spasms and cramps.
Will it Work Immediately?
The recommended dose of acupuncture is 20-30 minutes sessions 4-6 times on a weekly or twice weekly frequency to gain all the effects. However you should see a difference after one or two sessions.
What Symptoms Can it Help With?
Acupuncture can help with muscle spasm, tight back muscles, piriformis syndrome as well as sciatica symptoms (i.e. pain or tingling that presents down the legs).
Will Acupuncture Completely Fix My Back?
In a word, no. However, acupuncture can help with pain relief and muscle relaxation but the best use of acupuncture is as an adjunct to other treatments which should always include exercises.
In summary, there are a variety of different treatment tools available during your physiotherapy treatment with acupuncture forming part of this.
